Happy Summer!

Summer is a very exciting time for many of our nation’s youth.  Young people across the country are taking advantage of work experiences that are designed to expose them to the world of work.  These experiences provide meaningful learning opportunities for youth to explore career options and to begin developing the skills they will need for future professional careers and personal growth.

Most of us remember our first job, and, for many of us, it was a summer job.  Summer work employment opportunities have helped many youth and young adults gain experiences that impacted their career and professional choices.  Local workforce system programs are working with community coalitions and partners to increase the number of job opportunities for young people over the summer and beyond.  For information on the impact that summer jobs have on youth, effective practices for operating summer youth programs, and other related resources, this month, we are pleased to re-introduce you to the Youth Summer Jobs community and its many resources.

Community Spotlight: Youth Summer Jobs

The Youth Summer Jobs community provides an online learning platform for community leaders, local businesses, non-profit organizations, and faith-based institutions to learn and share information on creating summer job programs that help youth develop the skills they need for employment.  We invite you to join the Youth Summer Jobs community to learn more.

In addition, the Our Journey Together: Summer Employment Webcast Mini-Series will inform you of effective practices for operating summer employment programs.  These webcasts are snapshots of ideas for you to consider as you plan your local summer and year-round employment activities.  Topics include employer engagement, partner engagement, and recruitment and retention of out-of-school youth.

We hope you will find these resources useful as you launch your summer youth program!

That's all for June; happy reading.

Stay cool!
