Adult Education and Family Literacy Week

About

National Adult Education and Family Literacy (AEFL) Week, September 13–19, 2026, raises public awareness about the need for and value of adult education and family literacy. Its goal is to increase financial and societal support for access to foundational education programs for U.S. adults with low literacy, numeracy, and digital skills. Advocates across the country use this opportunity to elevate adult education and family literacy nationwide with policymakers, the media, and the community.

Join educators from across the country, along with adult learners, community partners, business leaders, legislators, and other supporters, to amplify the successes and impact of adult education during AEFL Week.

Established in 2009 by the National Coalition for Literacy in collaboration with members of Congress, AEFL Week provides a Congressionally recognized opportunity to highlight the importance of adult education and family literacy.

Each September, organizations and partners participate in activities and advocacy efforts to raise awareness, support resources for adult education programs, and expand access to opportunities that help adults build literacy, numeracy, digital, and other foundational skills.

In 2026, the Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE) is continuing its nationwide celebration by providing ready-to-use resources to help programs and organizations engage their communities. Resources include social media graphics, daily themes, promotional materials, webinar opportunities, and student success stories that showcase the impact of adult education.

For workforce professionals, AEFL Week offers an opportunity to recognize the role adult education programs play in helping individuals build foundational skills, pursue education and training, and connect to employment and other community resources.
