A trauma-informed approach to care acknowledges that organizations and care teams need to have a complete picture of a client’s life situation, both past and present, to provide valuable services with a healing orientation. Trauma-informed care seeks to realize the widespread impact of trauma and understand paths for recovery; recognize the signs and symptoms of trauma in patients, families, and staff; integrate knowledge about trauma into policies, procedures, and practices; and actively avoid re-traumatization.
Substance use and misuse often co-occur with mental health challenges. Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is a comprehensive, integrated, public health approach to delivering early intervention and treatment services for persons with substance use disorders and those who are at risk of developing these disorders.
