Building AI Skills in the Skilled Technical Workforce
About
Community colleges are central to preparing the skilled technical workforce for the fast-changing artificial intelligence (AI) economy. The National Applied AI Consortium (NAAIC)—led by Miami Dade College, Houston Community College, and Maricopa Community Colleges with support from the National Science Foundation—builds capacity for high-quality AI education and workforce programs.
Through faculty development, mentorship, and industry-aligned curriculum, NAAIC ensures training meets employer needs. Since its launch, the consortium has engaged more than 950 administrators and faculty from 40 states in training, conferences, and webinars, with over 400 earning credentials such as Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals, AWS AI Practitioner, Intel AI for Workforce, and Grow with Google AI modules.
The consortium’s AI-focused Building Industry Leadership Team (BILT) is developing a national curriculum framework for an applied AI associate’s degree that community colleges can adopt nationwide. These efforts expand affordable, employer-aligned AI education for students, incumbent workers, and career changers.
